Machando Making Most Of Australian Call-Up

Mackay Basketball junior standout Tendekai Machando is currently on tour in the United States with the Australian Schools National Basketball team.  The 16-year old was selected to the under-18 side, following a standout performance for Queensland at the National Championships held in Townsville, earlier this year.

Machando’s twenty-day basketball journey to the U.S, will see him compete in three high-school tournaments to be played in Austin (Texas), Charlotte (North Carolina) and Atlanta (Georgia).  The St. Patricks College student departed Australia last Tuesday and has spent the first week in training, learning to play with his new teammates.

It’s been a successful year on-court for Machando, having represented Queensland at two different national championships, while also playing with the Mackay Meteors under-23 men’s representative side.  He was also recognised during the Queensland Basketball League season, taking home the Most Outstanding Male Athlete Award for the QBL Academy program.

Prior to his overseas departure Machando said it was an honour representing Australia and was looking forward to playing in the green and gold.

“I’m really excited, not only about representing my country but also travelling to the U.S for the first time,” Machando said.

“Making this team was a goal I set for myself earlier in the year and I’m going to make the most of the opportunity for sure.”

“I can’t wait to get over there and experience a whole new world of basketball and learning things that will help me to improve as a player."

Along with his playing commitments, Machando will also get to see some of his favourite players in action at NBA games in both Charlotte & Los Angeles.
