Rockhampton’s Under 18.2 Boys Take The Silver

Fresh from their success at the 2015 State Championships, the Rockhampton U18.2 boys took to the court last night as junior fixtures officially kicked back in for 2015. Co-coached by Gareth Munro and Barrie Brady, the U18.2 boys built confidence as the tournament progressed stringing three wins and one loss in the round games, accounting for Basketball powerhouses Mackay, Gold Coast, and Townsville in the process. That set up a show down with Toowoomba Mountaineers in the Gold Medal match. The Rockhampton team put in a gallant effort, but unfortunately couldn’t get over the line, eventually succumbing 76-50.

The team had a number of highlights over the week long tournament. The win against Townsville Lightning was particularly memorable. In game that showcased the defensive ability of both teams, Rockhampton were able to pull through for a tough one point victory. Captain Kyle Zulian was impressed with how the team “held their nerve down the stretch”, highlighting his team’s sustained intensity across four quarters. In the end it was a game winning shot from Warwick Cronin-Stacey, supported by game high scoring from Bradyn Anwyl that got Rockhampton over the line.

Up and coming Toledo junior Liam Austin also had a stand out tournament finishing 6th in the State in scoring in Division 3 with 14.6 points a game. The coaching staff was full of praise for the boys accomplishments. Gareth Munro applauded the long preparation and level of commitment the team had made in the lead up to the Championships. “The boys worked really hard all season so it was great for them to get that recognition“.

For many of the boys it was their last opportunity to compete in the Queensland State championships and a fitting way for them to bring their junior careers to a close. The next step will be the U23 Rockets Development program, and maybe one day winning a State title with the McDonald’s Rockhampton Rockets.
