Angus Byrne says he gained plenty from his mid-season experience of playing a block of senior games.
Byrne is grateful to the club and senior coach Andrew Briggs for showing faith in him while still eligible to play thirds.
He says Mooroopna’s Daniel Lewis taught him some valuable football lessons after playing on him for a quarter.
“Unfortunately I wasn’t able to play in a winning team after I made my debut against Shepparton in round six,” he said.
“Daniel Lewis was the best player I’ve played and he taught me a lot of about how to cover the ground.”
The 16-year-old has progressed through the junior ranks of the Echuca Football Club and he figured in the opening eight rounds of the team that played in a premiership in the Shepparton and District Junior Football League last year
“I didn’t play in the grand final as I was away on a trip, so that is certainly a goal of mine is to play in a premiership with a lot of my good mates that I am now playing with in the thirds at the moment,” he said.
“I would also love to be able to play a couple more senior games, but we’ll see how that goes.”
Angus is the son of Echuca premiership player Ashley and Mary Byrne of Echuca.
And he says he loves playing for the Murray Bombers.
“I grew up around the club and I’ve really come to love it,” he said.
“It is great having Dad and an even Pa (Des Byrne) come and watches me play.”
“They are always giving me plenty of construction criticism.
Angus says playing at the highest level possible remains his long term goal.
