Over the past couple of weeks and over the next four to five weeks the curtain will progressively come down on all football/netball clubs and football/netball leagues across the WorkSafe VCFL – a year by the way that has gone very quickly.
During this part of the year we see a lot of time and effort put in by our Leagues, Clubs and Umpiring Groups into Medal Counts and or Presentation Functions. Apart from the finals and in particular Grand Finals this is where a wide range of people are recognised for their efforts throughout the year.
Best and Fairest honours are bestowed on the players receiving the most votes from the umpires across all home and away games. The B & F honour is no doubt one of the highlights of a players career and all winners are to be congratulated but it cannot be achieved without the support of their team mates, coaches and the infrastructure of their club and of course their families. It can also disguise the good, steady, consistent player that may be in the best four or five players every week but unfortunately just miss out on getting into the votes.
In these traditional end of season functions there are a wide variety of acknowledgements throughout proceedings and again we congratulate all those that are honoured in one way or another for their contribution in 2010 – all achieved in a great team and club environment where without passion, enthusiasm and the ability to work together on and off the field, little is achieved.
In many instances these functions are the final coming together of the clubs for 2010 where through retirements, work transfers etc people may move on, hopefully with cherished memories.
Another facet of celebrating the end of a given season is the football or netball end of season trip. Whilst the popularity of this traditional event has waned over more recent years (and probably for good reason) there are still trips conducted each year by a numbers of clubs. Admittedly some of the groups that go away for a weekend do it at arm’s length from their club, however the fact remains they are still directly or indirectly representing their clubs whether it is footballers, netballers or umpires.
The message is loud and clear to these groups that you carry the reputation of your club, your community, your family and your own reputation when you get away with your team mates and club personnel. By all means enjoy yourselves and reflect on your year and your mateship but please heed the warning on behalf of the WorkSafe VCFL and your Leagues that inappropriate behaviour and bringing the game into disrepute will not and should not be tolerated.
Let’s ensure that all aspects of the way your Club, League or Umpiring Group finishes the year is of the highest standard whether it be Medal Counts, Presentation Nights, Premiership celebrations or commiserations or the end of season trip with your mates.
Good Luck to everyone involved in finals this weekend.
Best Regards,
Glenn Scott

P.S. Congratulations to the Ballarat Football League for conducting an outstanding Junior Presentation night last Wednesday, August 18th at the Mercure Inn in Ballarat. I had the pleasure of attending this great function along with 569 others. It was fantastic to see all the young players and their parents dressed in collar and tie and associated women’s attire, with many junior players also presenting themselves in suits. It was a very professionally run “sit down” dinner that all involved will remember for years to come.
