Ex-Swan’s respect message

Former AFL player Ed Barlow was a special guest at the Deni Rovers and Mathoura football clubs on Thursday night last week.
The visit was organised by AFL Victoria Country’s Goulburn Murray football development manager Trevor Mellington in an effort to teach players about ‘‘respect and responsibility’’ towards their club.
Barlow, who played 34 games for the Sydney Swans and Western Bulldogs from 2007-2011, spoke to Mathoura’s junior and senior club members before heading to Deni for the same talk with the Rovers.
Anita Smith from the AFL also made part of the presentation.
‘‘I cover all of the Picola league teams and I asked the Rovers about what issues they wanted to address,’’ Mellington said.
‘‘When I spoke to Mathoura they said the same thing, so we thought it would be good to kill two birds with one stone and get Ed to visit each club on the same night.’’
Rovers president Craig McCulloch said the presentation was well received by players, parents and club members.
