St Peters Cambridge vs St Andrews - Mixed Final
This was a tantalising match-up with the 2010 champions St Peter’s taking on last year’s runners up.
The first attacking strikes went to St Andrew’s with New Zealand Mixed Touch Blacks player Richie Mo’unga stepping through the middle to set up a scoring opportunity early on; I was well-defended by St Peters on their line but Mo’unga was stamping his authority early on and there was more to come.
Five minutes into the half, Mo’unga ran into a hole and passed to his link for a 1-0 St Andrew’s lead. It didn’t last long – St Peter’s replied with a quickie play, and John Vanderweer scored with a dive underneath a defender for 1-1.
The stalemate didn’t last long; Morgyn Cowan got behind the St Peter’s defence and got the ball away to Kayne Wilkinson to score. The South Islanders then extended their advantage when Mo’unga created a stepback and then passed off for the winger to dive over. Halftime beckoned but Mo’unga wasn’t done, he scooped and got through the line before offloading to a teammate to go 4-1 up.
The second half opened with both teams scoring off their first tap-off; St Peter’s were first and got themselves right back in it, but St Andrew’s hit back within 30 seconds to make it 5-2.
This was followed by a bit of individual flair by number Shaun Boyce for St Peter’s, whose efforts reduced the deficit to 2 once again. Cowan though hit back for STAC, stepping inside and out to score.
Form there on in, St Andrew’s had an answer for all that St Peter’s could throw at them and extended their lead with Sean Murray scooping and creating an opportunity for number Mo’unga to score.
Boyce scored once more for St Peter’s and Crystal Walker-Ledger passed off for number Zane Crosswell to reduce the margin back to two, but St Andrew’s had built too much of a lead and went out deserving 7-5 victors.
