The match of the day billing at Bomberland didnt really go down to the line in the end as Hawks took control of the match in the second quarter, going on to a 57 point win, well above the consensus margin of pre match experts! Disappointing day out by the home team, missing some players, yes, but this should still be closer with the quality of personnel on board. The Hawks lead by Dillon Cabot, in career best form, either in the close contests or hard running. Lewis Cotton and Tom Shaw both up and coming A Graders and dont mind the close hard games, with evergreen Kirk Montgomerie again shining in the backline. For Wirrulla, Jason Henderson on the ball leading the best, new player Mc Donald putting his hand up as a prospect, young Lachie Ross poised in the backlines, Paul Haynes and Evan Whillas also doing well. Three goals to Shannon Haynes really the only threat to the Hawks machine.
West Coast Hawks will be pleased with their start under new coach Paul Evans, they continue to play a team oriented game style based on run and quick ball movement, but with enough flexibility to cope with various challenges thrown at them as other teams try tactics to usurp them. Still a good season underway for the Bombers, they will learn from this match and understand where improvement is needed to go further, Coach Mick Kessel is a master at modern football and will have notes at great length to improve this result next time.
The expected arm wrestle unfolded at Wudinna where the Magpies and Tigers scrapped out a dour contest, the Magpies prevailing by 2 goals only. The Districts boys will rue some errant goal kicking, but they remain keenly competitive against all sides. Standing tall again is Darryl Marshall, really leading the defence of the Magpies and a lynchpin in their game style. Harry Petty's excellent form continues and he will only get better, taller and faster in the next year or so. Neil Seaman's run and hard work ethic and Nick Jensen leading the ruck after a nasty knee injury to star veteran Mark North, understood to be a dislocated knee cap, The Tigers were led by Scott Feltus, at 39 this man is a machine, nothing stops him! (other than maybe wife Sharyn). Brodie Falciani strong again and proving he worth as a key recruit, Trent Brace, plenty of hard work and the elusive Shannon Horgan.
Central Eyre eclipsed a plucky Elliston who didnt throw the towel at any point. Bulldogs general speed and polish ended up too much for the Roosters, the Dogs pulling away at each break to win by 78 points. Much to be happy about in the kennel and pretty much everything coach Nails O Brien tried worked a treat, even allowing himself some bench time to run proceedings for a while. Jesse Stringer another solid high possession match, hard balls, tacking, contested marking and team leadership, a full package of a player. Jake Sampson also dominant in the midfield, extending a great season so far. Kane Sampson has slotted into the last line of defense with aplomb, Tom Freeth running from the backline had plenty of it, as did Jared Sampson. The list of the best will be long which is a good sign. Roosters also had some excellent contributors, On ballers Ross Bascomb and Jamie Kidney worked hard and enjoyed plenty of possession, Joe Burgoyne with leg speed and Adam Green, were great, Wayden Sumner skills and goal sense. Steve Paul stood up and Lachie Ciustance presented constantly, he has a great future. Jay Williams returning from a shoulder reconstruction continoues his weekly improvement, and such a great leader either at club level and above.
The club competition takes a breather next week as Mid West travels to Ceduna to take on the best from Far West and Lincoln City. Mothers day trainings at Minnipa and always good football at inter league level. Good luck to players and officials who will represent our league with pride !
