Pictured- The Goal Card at Elliston. 15 Goals by Jordan Newton, quite a feat!
The season is almost at its half way point as home and away football now breaks for the Mortlock Shield, Port Adelaide Cup, and for some to revise where they are at! The Bulldogs repeat their Grand Final medicine dose to the Hawks at Streaky Bay, an inaccurate Tigers outlast the Bombers at Minnipa, and Elliston flex their muscle, disposing of a luck lustre Wudinna United at Elliston.
The Grand Final replay at the Bay promised big, and delivered of sorts, the Hawks will have liked to be much closer, Dogs winning by 45 points. Tough and hard, as always between these two high flyers, tackles not being broken and winning the the ball hard work! Centrals won every quarter, easing away further as the match wore on, the big bodies, long kicking power and precision ball movement just too good in the end. The Hawks tried hard all day and will feel that they were able to stay with the ‘Dogs for periods, maybe just needing to increase the options forward! (Steed Sutherland back soon and maybe the older Champ Brent Bascombe warming up in the reserves).
As always, the work shared amongst the doggies, Lachlan Heath welcome back to the side and leading the best, Jake Sampson, Jake Bruce running and ball use, Zac Fitzgerald on the ball and just so hard to match up, five goals in another impressive performance, Kane Sampson the rock at the back, big man but not afraid to run when the ball turns over creating links. Tasman Fitzgerald with three goals and Wade O Brien two, just continue to provide sharp forward focus. Keenan Bury all day and Hayden Heath once again making centre half forward his own. Jared Sampson last game before a mid season break overseas.
The Hawks played well for large patches and maybe a few too many turnovers for their liking. Mark Dolling in the centre, hard, tough and uncompromising. Revels in these sorts of games and led the way for the Hawks, Dillon Montgomerie ever reliable, Dale Montgomerie three goals and strong in the contest, Jake Mc Evoy enjoying the run on the ball and displaying his blistering speed. Darren Brown showed good patches, Nick Schumann worked hard and Aiden Whitford always a dangerous forward.
The Hawks certainly went some way to bridging a gap since round one and will continue their build as the season continues, but the Bulldogs simply irresistible at the moment. They reach the Mortlock break undefeated in the A Grade and B Grade and have set the standard.
Roosters roared into top four favouritism against rival Wudinna United at the Rooster Pen! Coach Christian Weetra very pleased with his charges four quarter work rate and attitude as they swept the game away from a disappointing Magpies in perfect football conditions.
A standout performance in Jordan Newton, 15 goals. Excitement at Rooster land as everyone running for the record books, has his uncle Jon’s (Jon Newton) record been eclipsed? Some said yes, some no, uncle Jon shaking his head. (The record shows that Jon kicked 15 against Western Districts on 21 May 1994 at Elliston, and additionally kicked 14 against Streaky Bay the week prior, at Streaky Bay). So from uncle Jon’s point of view, the lad still has some work to do!, for the rest of us, this was just an outstanding effort.
Jordan’s heroics well supported by Liam Newton, dominating performance from the centre and precision passes forward, Jay Williams in sparkling touch, enthusiastic and fit, Ross Bascomb in everything and amasses disposal at will, Tom Rumbelow cleaning up across half back and almost untacklable. (new word for the dictionary!). Ben Hurrell dominated half forward, being the conduit for many goals, Rob Pickett with poise and typical hard at it style, Steve Paul a great target forward, Matthew Reeves after half time showed that he has a big future, Brodie Kenny at half back played well. A whole of team performance and structured well throughout, a few still to come back into the team will have the Roosters sharpening their claws as finals approach.
Very hard day at the office for the undermanned Magpies, simply too many disposals finding red coloured guernseys. Sam Buckham in the centre leading the best, Darryl Marshall another great game at the last line of defence, reading incoming plays well, David Moyse back into the side and showing the form that made him a premiership player in Mid West and Far North, Brayden Chambers enjoying a great year, Ian Jericho never gives up trying and captain courageous Henry Zwar. Remi North, particularly in the second half, and Thomas Dupree trying hard in the ruck can hold his head high.
The break comes at a good time for the Magpies, a chance to reassess and maybe look forward to college lads return for a few matches respite. Just couldn’t shut the relentless Rooster attack down and need to regroup to challenge for finals contention.
The Tigers kept their season alive with a typically hard fought win against the Bombers at home, ten points the win, probably a larger than usual margin between these two. Bombers may have torpedoed their top two chance, but the Districts boys will retain a hope for a second half of the season run at the finals. Did their very best that the Bombers stayed in the match with some wayward kicking, but some of these were rushed.
A huge welcome back to Dylan Beinke, his second game but he is adding additional bite to a centreline already productive, and certainly generating an improved level of forward entries. Dylan leading the way, along with Scott Feltus, Shannon Horgan who have both carried a large load all year very capably. Jerel Fromm another important cog, good in the air and on the ground. Kade Hood in the ruck, Steven Brands a great return of three goals, young and particularly skilful. Thomas Lee move forward was productive with three goals, and likely he will spend more time forward in the future. Damon King played well and fronted in the B grade also, so will have spent a weary Saturday evening. Good efforts across the Tigers team.
Again Yanni Kozminski leads the way for Wirrulla, fourth consecutive time and probably the form ruckman across the League. Not just ruck work, but high marking and general ability to get to the contest. Rob Holmes worked hard all day, Mark Binder mainly in defence, Regan Mastrelangelo proving a great pick up, the strength of Cody Colbung, Paul Haynes some great work also.
Disappointing outcome for Wirrulla, but they remain very much in contention and missed a couple of players who may well have bridged this gap. For the Tigers, coach Feltus very pleased to win a close one and put themselves back in to a position to launch into the second half of the season, Districts forever competitive and maybe have found some extra avenues to goal that they have been searching for?
