By Ben Warren - Norwwod FC Senior Coach
19 January 2016
The third EP Livestock & Real Estate and CPH Accountants academy session for 2016 was held on the 17th January in warm conditions in Ceduna at the local area school.
32 players arrived for a 9:30am start with Robbie Neill, Jarrod Cotton and Ben Warren taking the players through, step by step, the Norwood game plan. The style of football played by Norwood is quite a contrast to what the players are used to in their local leagues and it was a lot of information to take in all at once. Robbie also reiterated throughout his briefing, what it looks like to play as a team (18v18) offensively and defensively rather than the more traditional 1v1 and also what high performance looks like.
On completion of the pathway and game style education, the players were eager to go and implement our match day scenarios on the Ceduna Area School. The player’s ability to adapt, learn and reflect on the situations they faced was very good. Jamie Doudle, Nick Pedro, the Charlton brothers, Ali Johncock, Brad Noble and Cole Gerloff all showed a range of attributes that had Academy Coach, Jarrod Cotton, excited.
The players started with some simple skill based activities followed by some forward entry. The players did a quick warm down in the swimming pool before a magnificent lunch was provided by the Ceduna locals. Following lunch was one hour of defensive exit and then one hour of zoning and full match simulation. On completion the players again used the Ceduna Area School’s pool.
Mac Neeld, Jacob Kennerley, Kade Chandler and Jacob Collins all attended the state under 16 country camp at Immanuel college and were absent from the academy session in Ceduna along with a host of others still on holidays or training with Norwood in Adelaide.
Former Cleve resident and Eastern Rangers junior, Alex Villis, who is still under 18 and attended academy sessions last year, is currently training with League squad and ran sixth in the 2km time trial (6:34) on Monday night. Alex is clean and has a lovely kick and hasn’t looked out of place with the senior men.
A big thankyou to Nola Buckham, Andrew Taheny, Graham Woods and Glenn Dunn for the transport, preparation of lunch and general help (and everyone else!) and the Ceduna Area School for the use of their facilities.
Our next academy session will be held on Feb 14 in Cleve. We look forward to seeing you there!
