Maryborough welcomed home its favourite son on Monday as hoards of fans headed to the Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre to say hello to Matthew Dellavedova.

NBA and Australian Boomers star, Dellavedova made a pit stop in Maryborough earlier this week ahead of preparations for representative duties at the China World Cup at the end of next month.

Dellavedova said while the visit is short, he always loves getting back to Maryborough.

“It’s just a quick trip home to hang out with the family and I’ll catch up with some mates as well. It’s great to come back every year to run the clinic,” he said.

“I head back to Melbourne pretty shortly and get ready for the Boomers’ training camp.”

The training camp will include 17 talented Australians who are coming from teams around the globe, all vying for a spot on the final Boomers squad that will head to China.

Ahead of the cup, the Boomers will host Canada, one of their cup competitors, in Perth and team USA in Melbourne next month in four historical warm up matches which Dellavedova labelled a “rare” opportunity.

“I’m really looking forward to it, we’re going to have a really good team and it’ll be key preparation for the world cup in China,” he said.

“It’s not very often we get to play for Australia on home soil against such a good quality opposition so it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
