Billed as "The Decider" with the previous 8 matches being evenly divided at 4 each both teams were primed for the contest and eager to establish a break on their rivals.
In unfamiliar drizzling rain the conditions were wet and slippery with high scoring and marking taking a back seat to dogged defence and short kicks and handballs to advantage.
Despite goals to Ricky Prosser and Jordy Mandemaker in the 1st quarter FNFL trailed by 2 points at the first break.
FNFL's defence managed to keep BHFL goalless in the 2nd quarter while Ricky Prosser kicked a solitary goal in the second quarter to see FNFL go into the long break ahead.
With conditions deteriorating goals were at a premium, but the backline stood firm, and when Craig Hall and Jack Orr both slotted goals it gave the FNFL an important buffer. The last term saw both sides still hard at it and while Victor Buza's goal sealed the game for the FNFL, it was the great team effort to restrict BHFL's potent attack to 2 goals in the second half that won the match, to the delight of Coach Mark Dalgleish, Assistant Coach Jeff Griffin, FNFL President Henry Andryzczak, and previous Presidents Peter Lindner & Barry Mitchell, important architects of the Miners Cup.
Far North would like to thank our generous sponsors, Northpoint Toyota, Redpath, Blackwoods & bhpbilliton for their contribution to our league and the Miners cup. Without their support our players would lose the opportunity to represent their community and play on the prestigious Adelaide Oval, and their efforts to assist with local football in the Far North Football League are much appreciated.
