A wildfire raged through Fort McMurray, Alberta, and threatened an entire city. More than 80,000 people evacuated through smoke and fire and made their way to family, friends, and shelters.
Thanks to the generous outpouring of support from Canadians, Canadian Red Cross will provide immediate financial assistance totalling $50 million to more than 80,000 people displaced by the Alberta wildfires. Adult evacuees registered with Red Cross will receive $600 each and children will receive $300, so families and individuals can buy what they urgently need during this difficult time.
The needs are great and the Red Cross stands ready to support people as they work to rebuild their lives.
Your donation in action – how the Canadian Red Cross is helping
- Red Cross is making direct financial deposits to individuals and families affected to help respond to the immediate needs of evacuees. Hundreds of specially trained volunteers are also providing comfort and care to those who are suffering from emotional trauma, and helping evacuees at shelters, with registration, family reunification and to help meet urgent, basic needs.
- Shelters offering warm beds and meals in Edmonton, Calgary, and Lac La Biche are being supported by Red Cross.
- A family reunification service is being offered to family members separated during the evacuation, and for worried relatives across Canada who are trying to find loved ones.
- Pre-existing stockpiles of relief supplies (water, hygiene kits, cots and blankets, and more) have been distributed at shelters and other locations.
Canadians wishing to make a donation are encouraged to do so by donating to the Alberta Fires Appeal online or by calling 1-800-418-1111. All individual donations are being matched by the Government of Canada, between May 3 and May 31, 2016.
