Welcome Footy Heads to what is the lucky last review for the 2014 AFL Ontario Season!
What a season we had fans, so many ups and downs and bumps in the road along the way. The Grand Final Day itself was an absolute beauty, good weather even better games and the broadcast put on by Rogers TV was excellent. Here are my reviews from #AFLOGF Day
Hawks 10.8.68 def Blues 8.10.58
Such an arm wrestle all day I thought the Blues were on top early but just couldn't seem to get those goals on the board. The blew too many chances while Shutts and co. at the other end were making the most of theirs. Guys like Storm, Wills, Sone and Doc were solid all day for the Blues and they really did put up a bit fight, at one point looking like they could have snatched the victory. Shorty was everywhere all day, just couldn't kick straight early on and guys like Whittington and Rutledge played well too.
The huge collision that saw Dullard and a Blues player both come off the ground when the game was in the balance was amazing, but Dullard coming back on and snapping a goal shows how classy he is as a player. He basically sealed it there and was unlucky not to be given BOG in my opinion but then again I was watching on TV. Stirling was strong across half back taking a lot of marks and really set them up. Shutts 5 goals could have been more and Killa was all over the midfield giving plenty of drive and hitting Shutts on the chest regularly. It was any of the Big 3's best on ground medal for my mind.
All in all it was a great game of footy, the Hawks victorious and back to back premiers. Congratulations!
Phantom Predictions - 1/1
Rebels 7.1.43 def Dingos 3.6.24
The Dingos will be licking their wounds at a lost opportunity to win a third Div 2 premiership in a row. They had more scoring shots than the Rebels but just couldn't get the kicks thru the right sticks while the Rebels kicked accurately all day. After a tight first quarter they kicked 2 goals in each of the following quarters while the Dingos only managed 1.4 for the rest of the day.
Adam Curtis of the Rebels won Best on Ground honours while Donovan kicked 3 of their 7 and MacMillan 2.
The Rebels winning their first ever Mike Pyke Cup. Congratulations!
Phantom Predictions - 2/2
Swans 7.9.51 def Wildcats 2.2.14
The one pick I got wrong was a pretty hard hitting affair but it is safe to say the Swans definitely had the numbers in this one. An army of red and white lined the boundary line while the Wildcats had no bench, they were always going to be up against it. Missing Fluit up forward seemed to make it difficult for them to kick goals with Aimee and Margo Legault patrolling the HB line and rebounding everything. Kwan did the same for the Wildcats in her end but she didn't have the support up forward. Halliday and Arman kicked their goals and Comolli, Nicholl and Scott judged in their best the Wildcats are still on the hunt for that maiden flag.
On the other hand the Swans now officially have some silverware and were led by their Northern Lights stars as usual. Dickinson provided a lot of run up forward kicking 2 goals while Nguyen also had two goals. The Legault sisters also played well as did Costanza and Scott who was on the receiving end of some heavy hits but continued to get up.
The Swans with their first ever premiership in fine fashion! Congrats!
Phantom Predictions - 2/3
So Footy Heads, that is it for another AFL Ontario Finals Series and Season! Congratulations to all winners and commiserations to the losers. I am sure all the Silly Sundays and Mad Mondays were a blast. Aussie Rules was the biggest winner on the day and I hope to see another great season next year. Preseason isn't that far away!
