THE WEEKLY STING

Men

German Arms 76ers v Rim Shots

German Arms 76ers came out firing in this contest, piling in 19 first quarter points whilst restricting Rimshots to a solitary three points for the quarter. Coach Scott Rattus was insistent that the 76ers moved the ball on each offensive possession which translated into a great display of team basketball. Jaydan Tarca stepped up his game this week with some fantastic drives to the basket and mid-range jump shots. Troy Parker-Boers was at his best controlling the boards at both end of the floor. Rimshots battled extremely well on the back of Matt Kern and Glen Landseer who piled in 9 last quarter points to give the Rimshots some confidence going in to next round. Result being a solid 17 point win by the 76ers. Leading Scorers: German Arms 76ers 56 (J. Tarca 14, S. Rattus 9, S. Scott 8) defeated Rimshots 39 (M. Kern 13, R. Riach 11, G. Landseer 11)

Zodiacs 1 v Zodiacs 2

After last rounds impressive win against Zodiacs 3, the Zodiacs 2 outfit were out to secure back to back wins at the hands of their Zodiacs senior team. Zodiacs 1 welcomed back Joel Goodenough this week who made an instant impact on the game from the opening tip. Zodiacs 2 were missing key players in this contest and strayed from their game, looking frustrated going into half-time with a 10-point deficit. Zodiacs 1 upped their intensity level in the third quarter with Goodenough making some crucial plays often finding rookie guard Mason Baxter who was starting to hit his shots. The energy from Zodiacs 2 was better in the second half and they clawed back within 9 points at one stage, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough with Zodiacs 1 cruising to an easy 23 point win. Damaging Zodiacs 1 players Scott Baxter led his team with 13 points. Whilst Joel Goodenough collected a double/double with 11 points and as many assists. For Zodiacs 2 Aaron Morris again led from the front with a team high 14 points. Coach Darren Small will need his charges to at their best next round as they face the 76ers who show no mercy to opposition teams with their pressure defense and attacking style offence. Leading Scorers: Zodiacs 1 56 (S. Baxter 13, J. Goodenough 9, M. Baxter 8) defeated Zodiacs 2 34 (A. Morris 14, T. McDonald 9, W. Jarret 4)

Zodiacs 3 v Onka Piranhas

A more consistent team effort this week by Zodiacs 3 saw them compete extremely well with the fast paced Piranhas outfit. The main focus for Zodiacs coach Skeate Bald was trying to contain livewire Piranhas player Devon McGee, and slowing down their transition game. The result was that Zodiacs employed a trapping zone defense that seemed to rattle the Piranhas. Zodiacs point guard Zane Grivell was performing at another level in the first half as he registered five three point baskets to secure a 3 point lead at the half. Not to be denied Onka’s fought back with some great team play led by a barrage of dunks from McGee. Kyle Bagley also put together a strong quarter to edge Piranhas back in front by 5 points at the three-quarter time break. Zodiacs came out aggressively in the final quarter with Sam Graves and Tom Gibbon literally throwing themselves at the ball on every possession. As time elapsed, the Piranhas ran out victors by 7 points in what was a highly entertaining match. Leading Scorers: Onka Piranhas 50 (D. McGee 30, K. Bagley 9, Z. Georg-Dent 7) defeated Zodiacs 3 43 (Z. Grivell 21, S. Grave 12, T. Gibbon 5)

Mount Barker Magic v Hackers

Mount Barker Magic secured a 19 point win over Hackers this round in a tightly contested match. Magic Player coach Jason Warhurst was the most valuable player with 27 points, supported by front court bookends Andrew Mason and Matt Johns who obliterated Hackers on the offensive boards. Caleb Vears again battled well above his size and weight division, who along with Tom Boxer kept the score board ticking over. Dylan Moyle was also serviceable for the Magic in a game which a fourth-quarter fade proved costly for the undermanned Hackers. Next week will be a solid test for Magic as they face the Devon McGee led Onka Piranhas outfit. Mason v McGee will be a contest worth watching! Leading Scorers: Mt Barker Magic 63 (J. Warhurst 27, A. Mason 21, M. Johns 12) defeated Hackers 44 (C.Vears17, T. Boxer 11)

Women

Strathalbyn Storm v Zodiacs

Strathalbyn have proven to be the benchmark in the A League Womens competition, posting a solid 29 point win over the youthful Zodiacs team. Strathalbyn relies strongly on its team balance and depth with strong performances again by Carly Vivian 22 points and Wendy Hentschke 12 points amid an evenly-shared load. Zodiacs shooting guard star from last round Stella Zizikos was held well all game only posting 6 points for the golds.

Zodiacs face Onka Piranhas in the next round and desperately need a win to keep their season on track. Leading Scorers: Strathalbyn 49 (C. Vivian 22, W. Hentschke 12, G. Phillips 8) defeated Zodiacs 20 (C. Kretschmer 6, S. Zizikos 6)

Meadows v Mt Barker Magic

Mount Barker Magic further stamped their authority over the competition with a convincing 28 point win over Meadows. Fourteen year old Emmerson Bowen was simply outstanding for the Magic who were missing team leader Tennille Searl for this clash. Georgia Martin was solid for Meadows but needed support to stay in touch with the impressive Magic team. New Meadows player coach Skeate Bald who has crossed from Mt Barker Magic continued to be a positive voice for the young Meadows team, but unfortunately they just weren’t in the contest with Magic posting an easy win 49-21. Leading Scorers: Magic 49 (E. Bowen 16, E. Nobes 9, A. Hodgson 8) defeated Meadows 21 (G. Martin 10, C. Benfield 4)

JUNIOR STATE REPRESENTATIVES

The Eastern Hill Basketball Association are well represented in coming weeks 2015 Pacific School Games held in Adelaide. Local junior standouts Declan Hortle (Onka Piranhas), Georgie Pedlar (German Arms) will be on show with the South Australian 12 and under SSA State teams. Both were selected following an intensive trial period that started in July this year. Joining Declan and Georgie is EHBA basketball identity James Rattus (German Arms) who was selected as the team Manager/Assistant coach of the Boys team.

The competition is an annual event that includes junior State teams from every State and Territory in Australia. This year’s event is a little different with National Teams from India and China also competing in the 12 and under age division. The competition should be extremely tight with South Australia’s biggest challenge coming from the Victorian and New South Wales teams. The boys will be under pressure from the opening tip, drawing Victoria in the tournament opener. The opening game for the girls is against China in what should be an exciting and fast paced game. Asian teams like to play an up-tempo and fast style of game, coupled with a barrage of perimeter shots to stretch opposition teams. This will be a great test for the SA girls. EHBA wishes Declan, Georgie and James all the best this coming week.
