DAY 1 – Thursday 7 July – East Coast Challenge Kicks-off at MSAC! |
The U14 NSW Blues and Waratahs woke up in chilly Melbourne for the first day of completion at the East Coast Challenge, hosted by Water Polo Victoria. Along with our teams this year, NSW have two referees join the State Team Program, Tony Kirchner and Jacqui McGuirk. Both referees have officiated well, being provided with positive feedback and comments pool deck!
Our NSW Boys Waratahs were the first team off the blocks with a strong opening 24-0 win over Victoria White. The boys worked well together with the goalies Charlie Hunter & Jaiden Fairhead making great saves to keep a nil score line. They then came up against South Australia and Victoria blue with close but not close enough losses, 5-6 and 5-7 respectively.
The NSW Boys Blues finished the first day off with a 21-0 win against Tasmania to make it three from three. They started the day slow but kicked into gear by the second half to nab the game 6-2 from Queensland White, with a hat-trick from Lachlan Norgard. Game 2 against the Queensland Maroons saw a tighter unit, with a convincing 9-4 win with Connor Barclay netting a hat-trick this time.
It was a NSW affair in the girls’ competition, with the Blues & Waratahs playing their first game against each other. True to form, NSW made it a game to watch, with a jam packed grandstand. In a tight finish, the Blues nabbed the win 5-4. The game was a great show of technical skill, sportsmanship, team work, and state pride!
The NSW Girls Waratahs had a strong win over the home team (Victoria) with a 9-3 win which saw Sophie Earl & Karla Poot both netting a hat-trick! The girls had a bye on day one so will be ready to come out firing in day 2 with three games.
The NSW Girls Blues went onto win their next game; 32-0 over Tasmania which saw a strong Blues side come out of the blocks using every opportunity possible. Utility driver, Ellena Little added 11 goals to her tally. They finished off the competition with a solid 6-6 draw with the Queensland Maroons. A strong start with a 5-0 lead, but a strong Maroons team came back to level the score, which will make for interesting results!
NSW have definitely got everyone talking! Let’s bring on Day 2! #GONSW
