Women's Cup Final Preview - West Adelaide v Adelaide City

The Football Federation SA Women’s Premier Cup Final is set to deliver an enthralling match between two quality sides in West Adelaide and Adelaide City. West Adelaide sealed their place in the final with a 2-0 win over FFSA U14/15’s while Adelaide City also enjoyed a 2-0 win in the semi finals.

The two finalists have enjoyed some close encounters this season, in round 4 of the Women’s Premier League, Adelaide City came from behind to win 3-2. Later on in Round 13, the two teams played out an intense 1-1 draw that could’ve easily gone either way.

Both teams have consistently performed well and have truly earned their places in the final with Adelaide City maintaining a clean sheet in every Cup match in 2014. Adelaide City will be aiming for the ‘double’ after securing the Women’s Premier League for a third year in row and an amazing fifth league title in six years.

Captain Michelle Male praised a strong team performance that was well supported by a solid defence and spoke how Adelaide City is fortunate to have a well experienced side who needs to focus on using that experience.

“It’s a combination of having a bit of experience in the backline along with girls who are hungry for the ball. West Adelaide are a strong and experienced team so we just need to be a bit smarter in our play.”

For West Adelaide, their Cup run can be put down to every player performing in their role, creating a strong team that opposition clubs have found difficult to crack. Co-Captain Chrissa Pavlomanolakos spoke about the benefits of the tough Round 2 match against Para Hills Knights which they won 2-1.

“Everyone pulls together as a team and that’s what happened in that game, everyone backed each other and we got through.”

Pavlomanolakos also highlighted West Adelaide’s leadership is not reliant on individuals. While Pavlomanolakos and her Co-Captain Sandra Scalzi are the official leaders, they have plenty of support.

“We have a lot of other leaders in our team as well and it’s how we’ve pulled through all season so we won’t go into this game in any different way.”

Both teams are also glad to be playing each other as they want to test themselves against the best, highlighted by Male.

“I’m glad that we’ve got a good opponent for the Cup Final. It’s always fun as a player to go in with that expectation that if we don’t go in with it all we might not come out with a win, it really psyches and pumps us up for the game.”
