Masters Games - Match of the Day, Day 2

On day two of football at the Australian Masters Games, Marshene and Melbourne United met in the women's 30+ age group. Both teams held good possession in the opening minutes, with plenty of midfield play unable to push into either attacking third.

Marshene started to employ some strong wing play, cutting past Melbourne's defence with incisive passes. Continual chances were strung together for Marshene, including a one on one with the keeper that cleared wide, but they were unable to score in the initial stages. The deadlock was finally broken 20 minutes in after a counter attacking move from Marshene switched the flanks, exposing the gaps in Melbourne's defence, before a chip shot from outside the box crept over the keeper.

Marshene maintained possession and applied pressure to Melbourne's half of the field, who were unable to play from the rear due to Marshene's pressing attack. At half time Marshene went in comfortably on their one goal lead.

Coming out on a deficit in the second half, Melbourne United attempted to attack and push numbers forward, but Marshene took advantage of this with damaging counter attacks that almost resulted in a second goal. As the half played out with time running down, Marshene were happy to sit behind the ball with their one goal lead, while Melbourne fought harder in the midfield and evened out the possession.

After a final push in the dying moments of the game, Melbourne were unable to find an equaliser, with Marshene’s defence holding strong.

Final score: Marshene 1 – 0 Melbourne United.
