Three selected for Australia Women's U17 training camp

Three selected for Australia Women's U17 training camp
South Australians Grace Henry, Emma Checker and Georgia Williamson were called up to the Westfield Australia U17 Women's training camp in Canberra last week.

Henry, Checker and Williamson were the state's only representatives in the 26-player squad which ran at the AIS in Canberra on Thursday May 19 until Sunday May 22.

Checker and Henry play their football in the FFSA Women's Premier League for Cumberland United WFC and Adelaide City WSF respectively, while goalkeeper Williamson plays in the State League for Adelaide Hills Hawks.

The 15-year-old trio are U17 SASI representatives and for Checker, it was her third Westfield Australia Women's camp.

"It's a pretty good feeling to be called up," she said.

"I'm expecting this one to be more game specific looking at technical things because the last two have been more of a trial, having a look at how we play. This one will look at how we've improved."

Williamson and Henry were recalled for their second camp after impressive performances in their first.

"This is their second camp and they both performed really well last camp," said Checker of her SASI team-mates.

"It would have been really hard for them because they hadn't been to the first one. I thought they did really well."

Henry, a central defender was also delighted with her call up and was looking forward to again working with coach Vicki Linton.

"I’m really excited, it’s going to be a fantastic experience," she said.

"She’s a really good coach and you always learn a lot from her and the camp. It’s not just a try-out. It gives you a lot of confidence and you can focus on the things that she has taught us."

Henry admitted the chance to represent her country at the 2012 FIFA U17 Women's World Cup in Azerbaijan means plenty of time management in balancing school and soccer.

The 15-year-old conceded at the moment her Australia dreams are "probably" the priority.

"The U17 World Cup would be amazing but I’m just taking it one step at a time," she said.

"I’ve gotten to the stage where it’s so close, going off to the camp and that sort of thing, you know you’re in with a shot and if you don’t make it this time there’s always another chance – making that squad is the biggest inspiration."

"Managing your time, time management – it has definitely been difficult. At the moment, soccer is probably the priority."

Williamson also said she was excited by her second camp after a fantastic learning experience at her first.

The shot-stopper also admitted the World Cup next year is the ultimate goal.

"That is definitely what I’m aiming for and working towards," she said.

"I’m so excited. This is my second camp. The first was very nerve-racking. It was like a new experience but it was the biggest learning experience. I learnt so much in those four days, more than anywhere else."

SASI Women's Head Coach Kevin McCormack has tipped a bright future for the trio.

"Australia needs players like these girls," he said.

"They are committed, technically gifted and talented footballers. They've come through the system and look very good."
