Boots for Borroloola Update

Football Federation SA (FFSA) is delighted to advise that the Borroloola Cyclones – the first all Indigenous football team to compete in the Westfield FFA Cup will have boots to play in on Wednesday night.

Football Federation Australia has arranged boots for the Northern Territory side ahead of their important clash next week however following a call to action, the South Australian football community has also helped the small community and their footballers.

Boots for Borroloola – Community Assistance Required

Port Adelaide Pirates kindly donated 4 boxes full of second hand football boots in various sizes and training strips to be provided to the Borroloola Cyclones following the advertisement on the FFSA website asking for community assistance. In addition, a number of individuals in the community also donated spare boots for the cause.

FFSA is extremely grateful to both the Port Adelaide Pirates football club and members of the community who came forward to assist.

FFSA is delighted to advise that Santos also ‘came to the party’ after seeing the notice and provided the transport required for the boots and strips to get from Adelaide to Darwin in time for the team to collect them next Wednesday.

When Santos employee, and Junior Premier League coach , Steven Benn received the ‘Boots for Borroloola - Community Assistance Required’ email he immediately forwarded it to his work colleagues with a ‘plea’ for help.

The email ultimately landed in Kathryn Mitchell’s inbox. Kathryn is Santos’ Principal Adviser for Community Engagement for NT, SA & Victoria. She instantly recognised the connection with Santos having recently drilled its first exploration well in the northern part of NT, 250kms west of Borroloola.

“The sad story about the break-in at the Borroloola Cyclone’s club rooms really struck a chord at Santos, said Kathryn.

“I was inundated with emails from staff wanting to help!! We were thrilled to be able to help get the boots donated to FFSA sent up to the team in Darwin.

“It was a small gesture on Santos’ behalf but we know it will make a huge difference for the Borroloola Cyclones Club” she said.

But that definitely won’t be enough for the philanthropically minded Santos employees who are already planning a boot drive and fundraiser for the Borroloola Cyclones.

Steven and Kathryn plan a ‘bring your unwanted boots to work day and will invite Santos employees to give money towards purchasing collapsible goals, balls, bibs, cones and other training gear  for the club.

The Borroloola Cyclones Football Club has since reached out to FFSA to thank all involved in going to such an effort to help the boys with this donation of gear.

FFSA thanks Port Adelaide Pirates, Santos and members of the community for contributing to the Borroloola Cyclones Football Club.
