Tumby students selected for US program

Two Tumby Bay Area School students have their sights set on going to the United States after being accepted in a US college sport program for soccer.

Year 9 student Brayden Hammond and Year 10 student Peter Hennell were successful in getting into the National Scouting Report USA College Sport Recruitment Program.

This is significant for the school and the Hennell family as Peter’s sister Susan Hennell was selected for the same program last year.

The two students attended a tryout for the program at Adelaide Shores Football Centre on March 21 where they were among a group of 95 other students.

Brayden and Peter said they were excited to receive the news.

“I only read the first few sentences of the email and knew what happened, there was a lot of fist pumping,” Peter said.

For the program the students are required to complete Year 12 and maintain their soccer skills before they can start college in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

They will also need to complete a Scholastic Aptitude Test before they can enter the US college system.

Brayden and Peter have been playing for Lincoln Knights in the Port Lincoln Soccer Association for two years and have also represented Lower Eyre Peninsula in SAPSASA competition.

The students said they got into soccer at a young age and love taking part in the sport.

“Ever since I was eight I’ve been thinking about it,” Brayden said.

Peter said he got into soccer because his dad loved the sport and has since wanted to develop into a professional player.

With his sister also bound for US college, Peter said it was awesome for his family.

“It would be great to go to the same college if possible,” he said.

Tumby Bay Area School has congratulated the two students on their achievement.

Principal Nicky Prosser said it was great to see more Tumby Bay students make their way into the program.

“We’re so excited for them, it’s starting to become a tradition for our school,” she said.

“We’re pleased because it gives the students a focus for their future, they need to work hard to gain their academic success as well as on the sporting field.”

Brayden and Peter said they were aiming to play in Division One college soccer with the hope of making it into Major League Soccer in the USA.
