Adelaide United’s Emma Checker, Grace Henry and Ebony Philcox have all been selected in the Westfield Australia U17 Women’s squad for the AFC U16 Women’s Championships held in China between November 3-13.
The Lady Reds trio were called up for the tournament which sees Australia drawn in the final championship group along with China, DPR Korea, Japan, Korea Republic and Thailand.
The girls will arrive in Sydney on Thursday, October 27 for a pre-departure camp before heading to China on Sunday October 30.
Checker, Henry and Philcox will return to Adelaide and the Lady Reds after the tournament on Tuesday, November 15.
Football Federation SA Head of Women’s Football and Adelaide United WWL coach David Edmondson said the call up was well deserved for the trio who have stood out in previous matches representing their country.
“All three girls have shown in the short time I have known them that they are very hard working and very willing to learn about the game,” he said.
“When they made the Australian team that toured New Zealand a few weeks ago it was a first step on the International ladder and to have performed well enough in New Zealand to make the team to travel to China is again a testament to their work ethic and determination.”
“My colleagues and contacts in New Zealand were impressed with Emma’s physical ability, Ebony’s ability to control the game from midfield and Grace’s energy and quick passing. All three girls will play a major part in the Westfield W-League campaign this season and I am sure their experiences overseas with the U17 Squad will prepare them further for that.”
“I wish them all and Vicki and the team good luck for their tournament which will as always be very difficult against the likes of Japan, Korea and China.”
The team that tops the group at the end of the tournament will be crowned winners of the 2011 AFC U16 Women’s Championships while the top three will qualify for the 2012 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Azerbaijan.
