International Referee Exchange

Three senior Football Federation SA Referees travelled to England in September as part of a joint development initiative between Football West, Football Federation Australia, and The English FA.

A-League Panelists Stephen Toth and Rick Schneider, and National Talent Pool Panelist Christian Verdicchio were invited to participate in the 2012 Referee Study Tour with seven other officials from Football West and Football Federation Victoria.

The 10-day Tour was hosted by The English FA and involved both theory and practical sessions conducted by FA National Referee Instructors led by FA Senior National Game Referee Manager, Mr Ian Blanchard.

Session topics included Player Management, Offside, Match Preparation, and Nutrition.

The Tour culminated with a day-long session with English Premier League and Football League referees, the Professional Game Match Officials (PGMO).

FFSA B-Panel Referee and A-League Fourth Official, Rick Schneider admitted the exchange program offered great advice and guidance.

“It was good to experience a different style of coaching and a slightly different way of doing things,” he said.

There are a few things I learnt that I will definitely be implementing into my game here, mainly around communication, player management and team work between the officials on the park.”

“It was also great to some time with the EPL referees at their fortnightly training camp.”

FFSA Referee Recruitment and Development Officer Nathan Magill said it was a valuable experience for the match officials.

“Stephen, Rick, and Christian were presented with a unique opportunity to further develop their skills and gain valuable international experience.  I am confident that all three will gain great benefits from the trip that will assist them to reach their goals,” he said.
