Checker wins School Sports Award

Lady Reds defender Emma Checker was been awarded the top honour in the Secondary School category of The Messenger’s School Sports Awards.

The 16-year-old received the award last week at the Sport SA Awards at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, edging out Australian age record-breaking swimmer Kyle Chalmers and junior diver Matthew Barnard.

Checker, who plays for Cumberland United Women’s Football Club in the Adelaide Airport Premier League, had been called up to attend Westfield Matilda’s Camps during the year.

The athletic defender received her first international cap last week when she made her debut in the Matildas 4-0 win over Hong Kong in China.

Checker is also currently in her second season with Adelaide United in the Westfield W-League.

National javelin and discus champion Nikki Thompson pipped footballer and tennis player Sam May and underage swimming national medallist Jake Bastian to win the Richard Newman primary school section.

The school awards are co-sponsored by the Department for Education and Child Development.
