Junior Club in Focus - Metro United WFC

Metro United Women's Football Club is calling for aspiring young female soccer players to get involved in the junior girl's soccer carnival at the weekend, as the club prepares to host its first for the year.

The junior carnival is a Football Federation of South Australia initiative and is held at various clubs each Sunday from 21 April until 1 September as a way to encourage young females to participate in soccer.

Girls aged between 6 and 11 are able to participate in the day which will be held on Sunday, May 26 at Lindbolm Park Reserve on Quinlivan Rd, Pooraka.

Metro United has one team registered so far and will play against sides from West Adelaide, Cumberland United, Fulham United, Adelaide City, Para Hills East, Adelaide Comets and Adelaide Jaguars.

Metro United Club Delegate, Nicole Leonardis said the club will be using the carnival as a 'come and try day,' and is hoping to increase its junior membership.

"The carnival is not just about registered players only being involved and if there are young girls who wish to get in involved they are very welcome to," she said.

"They can come to participate and enjoy the day, then if they wish to sign on for the rest of the season, we will have committee members around the club to give out information."

The day will begin at 9am and include six small-sided matches, with food and drinks also available at the ground.

"The focus of the carnival is all about the players from every club playing and enjoying the game," Ms Leonardis said.

"Small sided football is essential in the development of junior soccer players and the day will help them learn skills about the game, which will enable them to progress into higher age groups over time.

"These players are our future and create sustainability within the club, so it's important to encourage them and provide platforms for development."

Metro United WFC is expecting about 100 people to attend the day, but Ms Leonardis said there is room for many more.

"We want to make the day fun for all involved and would love to see as many people there as possible and hopefully get a few new players to sign up with the club too."
