$2.1 Million Boost for Football in North East

Football Federation SA welcomes today’s announcement that if elected on March 15, a Marshall Liberal Government will commit $2.1 million towards the development of a major soccer facility in the north eastern suburbs.

The funding commitment would need to be matched by funding from the City of Tea Tree Gully, soccer and other sports partners.

A potential site for the major development has been identified at Maxlay Reserve in Modbury Heights but consultation with the local community will determine the final location.

The first stage of the proposed five pitch development will include:

One show pitch with an all-weather artificial surface

             Two turf pitches

             Lighting for all pitches

             Change rooms

             Club rooms and spectator facilities

State Liberal Leader Steven Marshall said the funding would support over 80 junior and 27 senior soccer teams currently playing in the north eastern suburbs.

“This is great news for soccer in the north eastern suburbs,” said Mr Marshall.

“Soccer is a growing sport in South Australia and we need to ensure our facilities keep up with that demand.”

Shadow Minister for Sport and Recreation Iain Evans said a Marshall Liberal Government will work with the local community to develop the project.

“This funding commitment builds on our commitment to reinstate $3.5 million per year of grass roots sports funding that Weatherill Labor cut,” said Mr Evans.

“We will work with the Tea Tree Gully Council, the Football Federation SA and residents to ensure this development is delivered successfully.”

Football Federation SA has developed a Football Facilities Strategic Plan. The strategy focuses on facility development to meet existing participation in Football and prepare for future demand for the sport. The City of Tea Tree Gully was one of 4 councils identified as a priority for the development of a new hub for Football.

Football Federation SA CEO, Michael Carter welcomed the commitment from the State Liberal Party.

“The commitment from the State Liberal Party is a significant step in the establishment of a Football Hub in the City of Tea Tree Gully and the north east,” said Mr Carter.

“Football participation in the City of Tea Tree Gully is estimated to be in excess 5,000 in the next 10 years. Development of a multi pitch Football Hub in the City of Tea Tree Gully would offer new opportunities for players in the surrounding suburbs.”

Modbury Soccer Club President, Francis Pollard, said the announcement is fantastic news.

“We have struggled with being on two sites and this will allow our seniors, juniors and (future) women's teams to all be together. This is brilliant. This is our 50th year, the club continues to expand and this will allow us to continue to grow in our next 50 too.”

The final design and location of the facility will be subject to an extensive community consultation.
