Gary Matthews Cup, Noarlunga United v Seaford Rangers
The Round 18 State League match between Noarlunga United and Seaford Rangers holds more significance than 3 points.
The local derby will be played in honour of former player for both Noarlunga United and Seaford Rangers, Gary Matthews as both teams compete for the Gary Matthew’s Cup.
Gary Matthews began his football career at the age of 5 playing at Christies Beach Primary School, continuing at Noarlunga United Soccer Club (NUSC) at the age of 7 in the U10’s for two seasons before moving to Seaford Rangers Football Club.
At Seaford, Gary played for every age group from U10’s to the Seniors, receiving many accolades along the way. In the early 1990’s Gary transferred back to NUSC, competing in a very strong team for close to 4 years. Gary concluded his football career in 1999 at South Adelaide Panthers Football Club.
Gary passed away from cancer in 2011 at the age of 39.
Monday’s Round 18 State League match will be played in remembrance of Gary with donations collected on the day going to cancer research.
Football Federation SA wishes both clubs luck for the match and for a successful event.
