Cup Preview: Adelaide City WFC v MUWFC

Adelaide City Women’s Football Club and Metro United Women’s Football Club clash in the Women’s Premier Cup Final in what promises to be an entertaining match.

The Zebras have scored 50 goals over their respective league and cup and campaign’s, almost averaging three goals a game. Sarah Willacy was asked what is needed to produce that result against a strong Metro side.

“As long as we keep the ball and play it around to our own players and don’t give away the ball and play at the feet and trust our own players we should be able to score some goals hopefully.”

They’ll be up against another high scoring team but Willacy remained positive they have the ability to nullify their opponent.

“Our main structure to mark up and playing the way we play normally and try to defend the shots, not let them get any chances and not give the ball away to them.”

One extra factor that will help the Zebras is motivation after losing last year’s Cup Final to West Adelaide.

“Definitely pretty strong, we definitely want to win it this year and try to defeat Metro the top side. Hopefully we play better than we played last year because we always start the game casual and then finally get into the game and really dominate the second half the majority of the time. So we’ll be looking to start strong.”

Willacy also opened up about what success would mean to this proud club.

“It would mean so much to the club to win the cup because we’ve been to the final a couple of years in a row, we’ve been the league multiple of times and it’d be great to win the cup this year and show them that we can actually  do it.”

Metro’s weapon up front, Marijana Rajcic will be doing everything in her power to stop the Zebras. Rajcic has scored 39 goals over the league and cup and gave credit where it was due.

“Most of it down to the team because football is a team sport. I wouldn’t be who I am if I wasn’t without them, a lot of the times they do the hard work and I have to tap it in, other times I do the hard work and let them tap it.”

While Metro can score heavily, Rajcic said that is only one aspect of what makes Metro a formidable team.

“When I look at it compared to other teams, I look at my team and I feel like we just have quality and depth in the whole club, not just our team.”

“So even if someone can’t play there’s always someone there pushing for spots, making it hard for the others so everyone has to be playing their best and giving their best to keep their spot.”

Rajcic talked about a recent addition to Metro and another important factor in what makes the Metro defence one of the most formidable in the state.

“We got KB (Kelly Barltrop) in goals, she joined the club this year and she’s done fantastic and just her foot skills and knowing that we got another sweeper behind our defenders.”

“They always make those last diving tackles, they put their body on the line. They’ll put their body on the line just to prevent a goal from happening basically.”
