Special Olympics Australia Coaches to Train with Tottenham Hotspur

Two Special Olympics Australia coaches – Igor Negrao (SA) and Larry O-Reagan (QLD) – will represent Australia at the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation Coach Development Program, to be held in Singapore, 23-25 October 2015.

The football coaching clinic will allow up to 30 Special Olympics coaches from 10 countries in the Asia Pacific region to benefit from the knowledge and expertise of Tottenham Hotspur coaches. This helps Special Olympics coaches to provide enhanced levels of coaching to athletes with an intellectual disability.

Tottenham Hotspur Foundation is a leader in the field of disability football and has over 10 years’ experience in developing the game from grassroots to elite level. Tottenham Hotspur Foundation and Special Olympics have worked together since 2007 in a partnership driven by a common goal to create social change through the power of sport. The bespoke program which was initially delivered in Europe and North America is now rolling out across the Asia Pacific Region.

According to Grant Cornwell MBE, Chief Executive, Tottenham Hotspur Foundation: “In our 10-year experience of working with athletes with disabilities, at both a local and international level, we know only too well the important role that sport plays in supporting social inclusion in the community. Having successfully delivered a pilot of this program with Special OIympics Bharat (India) last year, it is exciting to use Singapore as a hub to expand the project to more countries in the Asia Pacific region.”

South Australian coach Igor Negrao has been with Special Olympics Australia for three years. He was a football official at the Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games 2013 and was part of the South Australia delegation for the Special Olympics Australia National Games 2014. He is currently coaching footballers aged from 6 to 45 and is looking forward to “learn new ways to effectively coach athletes and help them to succeed on and off the field”.

Larry O’Regan from Queensland, has been a football coach with Special Olympics Australia for over ten years and in Singapore he is “hoping to develop some deep sport-related contacts and exchange ideas”. He is currently coaching boys and girls aged from 8-28. Larry would like to see more recruitment and training of younger coaches.
