Lady Reds v Perth Glory Match Preview

The Adelaide United Lady Reds take on Perth Glory Sunday at Coopers Stadium, as both teams look for a win after suffering defeats in the previous round.

The Lady Reds went down 1-0 at home to Sydney FC, whilst the Glory suffered a shock 3-1 defeat to the previously winless Melbourne Victory.

“Disappointing” was the first word that sprung to Rosie Sutton’s mind, when questioned about last week’s loss to Sydney FC.

“One-nil at home, in a game we thought we could’ve won,” Sutton followed up,” so I think everyone – I know I was really, really upset after the game – I was extremely disappointed.”

Sutton believed that a lapse in concentration and a lack of efficiency in front of goal was the cause of the upset loss last Friday.

“I think we just switch off for five, ten seconds and then things sort of spiral out of control a little bit and we didn’t really take our opportunities I think,” Sutton said.

After starting the season with a couple of impressive results, the Lady Reds have been winless for the past three matches and Sutton said that she and her teammates have been perhaps been lacking that extra bit of effort in the last couple of games.

“We started the season really well,” Sutton said,” I just think we maybe haven’t been putting in that last bit of effort into the games; that desperation in defending or maybe taking our chances, and even going into tackles and maybe a bit more heart and a bit more passion.”

Sutton knows the upcoming opponents well, having played for the Glory previously.

“I used to play for Perth and Jaimie Harnwell used to coach them, so we know the players quite well,” Sutton said.

“They’re a quality team, they have a really good midfield and a couple of good international players, and obviously they have Caitlin Foord, who’ll be back in the team next week.

“So I think they are going to be a dangerous team and I think firing because they lost their game at home as well, so they’ll be difficult to break down.”

Despite the 3-1 loss to the Victory last weekend, Perth midfielder Caitlin Doeglas was happy with her team’s performance.

“I thought we played really well through the centre, it was just finishing those chances that would’ve put us over the line,” Doeglas said.

According to Doeglas, Perth needs to work on that efficiency in order to do better.

“We need to finish those opportunities, we are getting the ball up the midfield great but it’s just finishing those opportunities that we get and most of our chances.”

Doeglas is really impressed by the Lady Reds and their style of football.

“I just finished watching their game that was televised,” Doeglas said,” they were playing really great football.”

“They are obviously playing with a different set up with a four in the midfield, which we need to adjust to.
“I reckon it will be a great game.”
