Five-Star Lady Reds Shoot Down Jets

Christmas came early for Adelaide United who revived their Westfield W-League campaign with a series of late goals helping them to a 5-1 win Newcastle Jets at Magic Park.

Adelaide put their mark on the match early, hitting the Jets on the counter and creating a chance that United’s midfielder Abigail Dahlkemper was able to slot away, giving the away side the lead inside the quarter-hour mark.

A run from Gema Simon put the Jets on the attack inside Adelaide’s box and the cross back into the box caught the hand of a Lady Reds defender, with the referee pointing to the spot and Tara Andrews duly converted the resultant penalty.

Soon after, however, Allira Toby found the back of the net off a set-piece that gave Adelaide the lead again and the Jets were down by a single goal for the second time in the match.

Adelaide’s lead remained into the second half and they opened strongly, testing the Jets’ goal with a shot from Toby that curled wide at the last moment, sparing Hannah Southwell from making a diving save.

A defence-splitting through ball in the 74th minute gave Rosie Sutton a one-on-one with Southwell, who did well to block the first shot but the Adelaide striker was able to scoop it up once more and place it into the open net.

One final push from the away side gave them another goal, with Emily Condon smashing a spectacular long-range shot into the back of the net, and the lead was extended further by Dahlkemper as she claimed her brace via a set-piece with the final kick of the match.

The late goals sealed a dominant victory for the Lady Reds, a win that now leapfrogs them over the Jets and holding a firm grip on fourth place.
