Lady Reds v Canberra United Match Preview

It will be a do or die clash for the Adelaide United Lady Reds this Friday as they host Canberra United in the final game of the 2015/16 Westfield W-League season.

Two losses on the trot has seen Adelaide slip into a precarious position in which they will have to rely on other results going their way to secure finals, should they take all three points against Canberra.

Regardless of whether or not a maiden finals campaign is secured, it will still be an historic season as the Lady Reds will have achieved their highest placing in the clubs history.

Newly arrived Isabel Hodgson said the team was firmly focused on recording the win on Friday night.

“The mentality is to go out and win; we need these three points majorly.

“If we win it will be the first time this team has ever made finals so it’s everything on the line this week.

“We’re not going to get off that pitch until we have those three points.”

Although signed as an injury replacement to cover the loss of Captain Marijana Rajcic, Hodgson had previously pulled on the red shirt in 2014/15 and knows just how important this season will be in pushing on to continued success.

“The last couple of years we’ve progressed further up the table and this year has been better overall.

“Even if we don’t make finals, we will still place higher than we have before so it’s still a really big step for this club in becoming competitive each year.”

The Lady Reds will have everything on the line on Friday, and as a result, Hodgson believes that the mental aspect is just as critical to getting it right on the pitch.

“It’s going to be tough, but it’s going to come down to which team wants it more.

“Canberra are already in finals, they’ve already got the home pitch advantage so they’re not really playing for anything.

“We’re playing for everything, so I think it’s going to be all or nothing.”
