MetroStars flyer links Club success to ACS Football Program

Young MetroStars winger, Ben Head, enjoyed ‘that winning feeling’ in the 2016 season, after his side defeated West Adelaide to claim to the PlayStation 4 National Premier League Reserves Title.

At just 17 years of age, Ben is entering a crucial period of his career; however, he knows he’s in the perfect spot as an athlete in the Australian College of Sport (ACS) FFSA Football Program.

“I feel a lot sharper and a lot stronger in my game. I am more confident in my abilities since joining the program”, said Ben.

Wingers in today’s game are ideally capable of doing their best work next to the left or right touchline, and like any aspiring professional, Ben tailors his game from looking at some of the World’s best.

“I model my game on Arjen Robben and Angel Di Maria, seeing as they are both left-footed players who love to dribble and score goals, just like myself.”

“I’m focusing on using my right foot and limiting the amount of touches I have on the ball to limit the amount of times I give the ball away.”

It isn’t just watching European games at all hours of the night which is helping Ben; ACS Director of Coaching, Phil Stubbins and his High Performance Team are providing key direction throughout the week.

“They’re telling me I need to relax and slow down when in possession of the ball, which will help me to make smarter decisions and be more effective in my distribution,” he said.

It’s off the pitch too, where the ACS Football Program provides insight to the life of a professional player with football-specific training in the gym, pool and classroom.

“I’m working very hard in the gym, using the off-season to put on a bit of size and get even stronger,” said Ben.

“We have been provided outstanding insight into what it takes to become a professional including the mindset and the required level needed to achieve and maintain a professional footballer’s career.”

It’s evident too that the ACS Football Program Squad has become tight-knit team working together towards the same goal.

“It is a very enjoyable environment to learn and grow in,” stated Ben.

“It’s a great feeling to be a part of this group of boys and people that have the same goals and mentality as you.”

“It is the perfect place to learn new skills and grow and improve to become a complete player.”

“You don’t get anything for nothing and it’s the same at ACS.”

“I would recommend this program to those who are keen to improve and that are prepared to put in the effort and go that extra mile.”

In 2017, Ben’s looking to advance into the MetroStars Senior side more regularly and push for consecutive years of silverware.

And beyond next season, Ben’s goal is clear.

“No matter what, I want to always enjoy and love the game; still push to achieve as much as I can and hopefully go all the way to be playing at a professional level.”
