Hailu-lujah for Central City

Like most players in the Victorian Champions League this season, Hailu Bugali is treasuring every moment, learning new skills, making new friends and gaining a greater appreciation for the game he loves.

However, Hailu is not as fortunate as most playing in the VCL. The talented youngster has endured a very different upbringing, arriving in Australia as a refugee from Sudan. He has had adjust to a new way of life in Melbourne, with often football being the only positive outlet for him.

Central City FC has enabled Hailu to progress his development under the expert guidance of Under 15s coach Socrates Nicolaidis.

“Hailu has a love and passion for this game that transcends way beyond our imagination.

“He travels by public transport from the west on his own to Thornbury and South Melbourne for training, which in itself says how much he wants to be involved in the game.

“Hailu has incredible skills that he brings to the game which is very refreshing to watch and be a part of.”

Hailu plays for South Yarra in the winter along with several other Sudanese refugees. Hailu receives terrific support at South Yarra and the club is also aided by the United Through Football Program.

This Football Federation Victoria initiative in partnership with Vic Health aims to break down barriers which may prevent participation including travel, equipment and uniforms by providing grants to individuals or clubs.

As well as playing for Central City in the summer and South Yarra in the winter, Hailu takes part in the football program at the Western English Language School in Braybrook.

Hailu and Central City will be in action this weekend as they take on South East Cougars.
