ROUND Five of the GRFC Men’s Over 35 Masters’ League saw a dominant Drysdale comprehensively defeat Barwon Heads 5-0 in a very one sided affair at Village Park in Barwon Heads.

Played under lights last Friday night, Barwon Heads hosted Drysdale in what proved to be a forgettable match for the home side. Within the opening 15 minutes, Drysdale had total control of the clash, not letting Barwon Heads get a sniff of the ball.

At the half time break, the score was 1-0 courtesy of a Kevin Smith goal, who went on to score two more goals in the second half, providing him with his first hat trick of the season.

Ali Davys and Murray Buchanan registered singles apiece to complete the score at 5-0.

Over in Batesford, at the Bell Park Sports Club, Bell Park defeated Barwon SC 3-2 to move six points clear at the top of the competition standings. Mark Gstalter displayed his skill on the ball by netting a brace for Bell Park while Peter Bruno nailed a single to complete the scoring. Gary Burton and Gary Harper both scored singles apiece for the visitors.

At Corio’s home ground, Hume Reserve, an undermanned Elcho Park visited Corio and left with a 2-0 loss. To start off the game, Elcho Park just had 11 players take the pitch while Corio started with nine. By half time, however, Elcho Park defender Mark Alic and striker Jozo Boras were both forced to the sidelines with injuries which would force them off the field in the second half.

The home side, meanwhile, had two latecomers take the pitch and for the first time this season, Corio was able to field 11 players. This was to be a telling factor in the second half, as play resumed after the break with scores locked at 0-0.

With Elcho Park down to just eight men, as Martin Luburic hobbled off with a leg injury, Corio took advantage of their numerical supremacy and scored in the 62nd and the 85th minutes through Petar Bozic to deservedly take their first points of the season.

Following the completion of Round 5, Drysdale moves to equal 2nd place on the ladder, just behind Elcho Park Cardinals and ahead of third placed Barwon on goal difference.

Looking forward to this weekend’s round of matches, first placed Bell Park will clash with Barwon Heads on Friday night at 7.30pm in Barwon Heads, while an hour later Barwon will host Elcho Park Cardinals at Grovedale Reserve. The only Sunday game will be the Corio v Drysdale clash at Hume Reserve, with kick-off set down for 1.00pm.
