NEWS: GRFC Women’s Division One – Round 9 Review

DEAKIN DUCKS recorded a comprehensive 6-0 win over Barwon SC in Round 9 action of GRFC Women’s Division One last weekend, while the other two matches of the competition ended in draws enabling the Ducks to extend their lead at the top of the standings to a massive 11 points.

The very first goal of the game was scored in the 2nd minute by Hannah Gordon which made Deakin look confident going forward. The game looked hopeful for Barwon at half time when the scoreline sat at 1-0 however Deakin came out after the break on fire with Hannah Gordon scoring her second just four minutes in.

Other goal scorers for the day included Madeleine Lee Gow, Romani Leech and Andrea Thornton all scoring singles apiece to keep Deakin undefeated at the top.

The highest scoring matchup from the round was an entertaining 4-4 draw between second placed Drysdale and third placed Kardinia. The teams had lots of chances especially when Kardinia opened the goal scoring at the four minute mark.

The teams went into half time with the score at 3-2 for Drysdale, with Sofia Harrop netting a brace for Kardinia while Serena Clapp did the same for Drysdale. The only other goal in the opening half was scored by Drysdale’s Shannon Daffy.

After Olivia Smith scored a goal following the resumption of play, Drysdale seemed to be cruising towards victory. That was until Bella Murphy-Bowen scored a brace for Kardinia, within five minutes of each goal, ensuring the two teams shared the spoils.

Surfside Waves hosted Geelong SC on Friday night that resulted in a 1-1 draw. The two teams currently sit 4th (Surfside Waves) and 6th (Geelong). Geelong’s draw with Surfside gave the Lions their first point for the season ending their long running losing streak.

The lone goalscorer for Surfside was Gina Murphy while Jessica Rayner scored for Geelong.

In Round 10 action this coming weekend the highlight will be a mouthwatering top of the ladder clash between Deakin Ducks and Drysdale. This game will be played at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus on Saturday at 3pm.

Other match ups include Geelong SC v Kardinia at Stead Park, where Kardinia will looking to jump into second spot on the ladder, while Barwon will host Surfside Waves at Grovedale Reserve. Both of these games will also kick off at 3pm on Saturday.
