NEWS: GRFC Men’s Division One – Round 12 Report

SURFSIDE Waves continue their climb up the GRFC Men’s Division One ladder after their 4-0 victory over Barwon Blue in Round 12 action last Friday night. The game was completely controlled by Surfside and resulted in Jack Pedler netting a brace while Aaron Bond and Craig Groom scored singles apiece.

Competition leaders Deakin Gold fought out a close 2-1 win over Breakwater Eagles, showing a less dominate performance than the last round. Peter Dawe opened the goalscoring just before half time with a single and then Ipyana Killimbe followed up late in the second half to secure the win. Jack Wilson scored the consolation goal for Breakwater.

Deakin Ducks Green and Drysdale had a high intensity matchup that ended up 2-1 in favour of Drysdale. The Ducks started off strongly and had a cracking top left corner shot to put them in the lead at halftime. Nick Hopper from Drysdale had an equally great pigeonhole effort after the break to equalise while soon afterwards Danny Graham played textbook soccer and netted the winning goal. Deakin’s lone goalscorer was Jonah Kipnis.

Barwon Heads captured 7th spot on the ladder from Geelong, after the Hammerheads defeated the Lions 3-1 at Stead Park. Robert Armstrong led Barwon Heads upfront, scoring a brace for his his team. Jess Rapa then put Barwon Heads further in front by netting a single. Geelong’s lone scorer was unknown.

Barwon Red hosted Elcho Park at Grovedale Reserve in a surprisingly close match up, which saw the Reds eventually triumph over the Cardinals 3-2. The three individual goal scorers for Barwon included: Sean Mahon, Ashley Dafter and Alexander Fannon. The two players who kept Elcho Park in the game, each netting a goal apiece, were Zrin Pezer and James Purcell.

The clash was originally scheduled for Elcho Park, but after the pitch was deemed unplayable, earlier in the day, the match was hastily shifted to Barwon’s ground. Barwon Red currently sits 2nd on the ladder while Elcho Park sit at the bottom without a win.

Geelong Rangers ran out easy 5-1 victors over close neighbour Bell Park at the Bell Park Sports Club in Batesford. Rodney Vanderchys scored a brace for the Rangers while Scott Davison, Philip Dobie and Nicholas Hogan all nailed singles apiece to claim the three points. Bell Park’s goalscorer was unknown.

The final game of the weekend was played between Deakin Ducks Black and Surf Coast. The matchup was extremely one sided with Surf Coast taking all three competition points, courtesy of a comfortable 4-0 victory. Jack Duffy led the charge scoring a brace, while Michael Pocklington and Marcus Jablonski scored singles apiece.
