U18 Girls Irish Tour

Our U18 Girls headed off last weekend on a little tour of the south of the country and played 5 friendly matches in what was a pretty tough weekends basketball. With only 7 fit players able to travel our girls did themselves and the club very proud winning 2 out the 5 matches and really showing great team work and fitness over the course of the 3 days. First they headed off about 9am on the long trip to Causeway in Kerry where they played their first game before heading over to Killarney for another match. Great thanks to Team Kerry & Denny Porter for their hospitality and then to the Killarney Cougars and their coach Dave who arranged the kerry end of things for us. We stayed the night in Killarney and enjoyed a ourselves in the Kerry tourist capital. No rest as it was up and at them the next morning where it was off to Castleisland to play one of the countrys top clubs.  Again the much smaller Donegal girls aquited themselves very well in a great team performce and ran the hosts very close indeed again if we had a few more players a win was on the cards but a great learning curve for the girls. So it was off on our travels again as we headed for our base in Laois and when we got settled in it was off to see an american college team play Dublin Thunder in Kilkenny and what a match that was. On to Sunday and it was over to Portarlington where good friend of the Club Martin 'Kojack' Conroy had set up a mini tourney for our girls. Great thanks to Martin for this and we were really well looked after. Up first was our 2nd big fish of the weekend and Oblate Dynamoes who had multiple international players in their ranks. Our girls gave as good as they got and went in at half time just a few points down. Injury to Captain Claire Breslin left our Girls with only 6 players but they battled on gamefully given the Dublin team all they wanted. A rest before they played the Midlands Select on their last game of the  tour and again another top performace saw them come up just short against very strong opponents. The weekend saw all our girls really improve and play at a level which gives great hope for this talented gruop of girls. Thanks to Stephen Carty who travelled along with myself and looked after the girls and to the girls who really gave their all in their club colours. MVP for the Trip was Kelly Harron who had a terrific weekend along with great displays for Maeve Liston, Michaela Breslin, Claire Breslin (c), Grainne Gillespie, Roisinn Mc Daid and younster Holly Marie Carty who also found her feet at this high level. Well done Girls you did yourselves and the club very proud.
