Ladies get NWL off to winning start

Ladies North West League

Sligo Giant Warriors 41        Britton Insurance Donegal Town 77

Our ladies started their defense of their League Title with an away win over an improving Sligo Giant Warriors. Ruta Balezentyte and Maeve Liston were on top form from the start hitting good early scores with Maeve hitting 8 points but it was Warriors who came out the strongest at the start of the game and led with good early scores from S Mc Dermot and A Dunikowska who had a good inside game. The middle of the Quarter at 9-8 their was a real battle and Defenses were winning out until good scores from Claire Breslin and Tara Khan steadied the Champions who pulled away winning the quarter 10-19. The 2nd quarter was all about Tara Khan who was a real menace to the Warriors and she led the Donegal Girls with 8pts and some great ‘D’ along with veteran Charlene Mc Hugh who was dominant of her own boards and provided a great platform of attack. Kathryn Carron nailed a lovely 15 footer and with Tara scoring 8pts a good quarter ended up 19-8 to the away team. The 2nd half saw more of the same with Sorcha Fallon very good for Warriors and kept her side ticking over on the score board. Roisin Mc Daid made her debut for the Town with her mother Helen (Muldoon)Mc Daid a former great captain and player and Roisin played very well . Also a debut at ladies level for Claire Brady and great to see her back in the club colours and playing well. The Third quarter was 16-8 to Donegal. Julianne Murphy, Ruta again and Maeve were very impressive. Warriors to their credit came out for the last and again came back at Donegal with R Monaghan hitting some lovely scores and they had their best quarter which was 15-16 to Donegal. Claire Breslin, Ruta and Michelle Bennett all had great last quarters for Donegal. Warriors deserve great praise and for such a young squad they will add greatly to the league. Next up for Donegal is away to Kilcar on 10th of November 6.30pm. Murphy and Mc Hugh provided the platform for this win along with MVP Tara Khan who was excellent all night. Fallon was very impressive for the Warriors. Referess were Anthony Flores & Milan who stepped in at short notice to do a good job.
