Letterkenny sides come to Town

Donegal Town welcomed Letterkenny sides Ravens and Lyit Ladies to town on saturday evening for 2 important league games.

Ladies North West League

Donegal Town B.C.  61 Lyit Ladies 48

The ladies played 2nd placed Lyit in their 2nd last home game and remain top of the league with one to play. These 2 sides have produced some great games over the years with a great rivalry at the top of the table. This was no different and it was Julianne Murphy who gave the home side a good start around the basket along with Charlene Mc Hugh. Katriona Coyle replied for the vistors with the quarter finishing 15-10 to Donegal Town. The game was played at a great pace with Sinead Gallagher controlling things for LYIT and keeping her team in it with some great passes and drives. Donegal remained in control with young Maeve Liston a constant thorn in Lyits 'D'. Libby Duffy controlled the boards for the home team and gave a great base for Murphy and Tara Khan to get away on the break. Captain Charlene knocked down a few great scores at vital times to keep the home teams nose in Front. Half time there was 7 points in it and Donegal responded well in the third with Tara Khan getting 9 to ease into a good 20 point lead. To Lyit's credit they fought back and kept it interesting for the large crowd. Along with point guard Gallagher, Grainne Cullen really upped her game hitting 16 points with some lovely shooting . Donegal though were'nt going to be denied and saw out the game winning by 13points to secure their 4th League Title on the trot. Well done Girls and exspecially Captain Charlence Mc Hugh who is the driving force behind this great team. MVp for the game was Rosa Devanney who was tremedous thoughout. With u18 players Maeve Liston, Kelly Harron, Ruta Belazentyte, Roising Mc Daid, April Gildea, Claire Brady and Michaeal Breslin all playing big parts in this years league the future looks good for our Ladies. Mens North West League

Donegal Dragons 74 Lyit Ravens 88

This was the game everyone was looking forward too. Ravens who are Letterkenny Heat and LYIT emalgamated and also play in the Premier Division in the North. They have been a great addition to the North West League and with out doubt the standard bearers for the rest to catch up too. Coached by Kieran Walsh one of the countys best players over the last few decades he now puts his skills to great use on the line for the Letterkenny side. The Dragons had to win this game to force a play Off for the league title but Ravens just had too much for the youthful Dragons. The game started fairly even with Donegal taking an early lead but as the quarter came to a close the Letterkenny men had shaded it and opened out a 9 point lead. Steve Canon hit a few lovely 3 pointers which Donegal found hard to close down. Donegal didnt give it up and kept going at the much more experienced Ravens and as half time approached were a little unlucky to find themselves down 48-31. The Third saw a great effort from the home team carried by the lightning Ryan Malley and Conall Sweeney despite creating the chances could only win the quater by 2 which wasnt enough. Donegals disipline cost them in the end with big men Jason Duignan and Edward Begley both fouled out along with John Kennedy who strangely  was fouled out in the 2nd?  But credit to the Dragons as they pushed to get them selves back in the game. Ryan Malley played one of best games and was in the heart of the Ravens D at every chance. With some of the 17s that did so well in Kerry last week making the step up to the Mens side the future also looks good for this side. Edward Begley, Patrick Reid, Oisin Gillepie, all came into the squad for the first time joining u18s Gary Breslin , Daniel Mc Sharry, Emmett Doogan and Dara Quinn. But this was the Ravens day and they deservedly took the game and the League Title so well done to them. The Club would like to wish Dillon Muldoon as speedy recovery from an ankle injury which kept him out of the game and with Captain Jordan Carty on Gigging duty in Dublin and Leo Mc Hugh also unavailable hopefully they can get back in and give the cup a good shot. Ravens had a great display from former underage Irish International Marko Canon who hit 36 points and was the difference between the 2 sides along with his brother Steve they combined for an amazing 50 points we might need to get their Uncle and former great for us Father Michael Canon back to sort them out! With Conor Boyle pulling the strings and Conor Reid pickin intelligent holes in the Dragons 'D' they just did enough to keep the Dragons in 2nd place. Special mention to Billy Banda who we all know as a lovely touch around the basket but Billy was spotted on the Fast break on more than one ocaision too to show he still has it. Well done to both sides. MVP was Marko Cannon pushed all the way by a great display form Ryan Malley.Dragons; Jason Duignan 10, Conall Sweeney 10, Ryan Malley 33, Zak Balogun 5, Jonh Kennedy 2, Edward Begley 2, Patrick REid 2, Gary Breslin, Emmett Doogan, Ray Balogun 8, Daire Quinn 2, Daniel Mc Sharry, Oisin Gillepie. Coach Kevin Sinclair.
