Taree West and Wingham lead the way in primary school basketball

Two weeks into the primary school based basketball competition at Saxby’s Stadium, Taree West and Wingham boys, head the standings with solid wins on Saturday morning following their hard fought 24 points all draw the previous week. 

Results from Saturday morning saw Taree West defeated the Wingham mixed team 38 to 11 on the back of a MVP performance from Trae Gersbach who finished with 10 points and received good support from Ryan Thompson, Sophie Watson and Rory Mitchell with 6 points each. 

Jake Brood (5) led the way for the Wingham mixed team withLuka Urquhart,GeorgiaLane and Jayden Saunders also playing well.

The Wingham boys had trouble finding the basket in the first half of their game against St Josephs but when they found the range, the margin blew out as they raced to a very comfortable 68 to 8 victory.

This was a very good win by the Wingham boys with all team members scoring points. Lisiate Hull was in sparkling form to lead all scorers with 24 points with Nash Atkins next best with 14 points.

Reece Jeffriess and Dane Wallis battled hard for St Josephs to top their scoring with 4 points each and although beaten, the team never gave up and fought hard all the way to the final siren. 

The last game saw Taree West back up to take onChathamand they recorded their second win of the morning with full time finding them ahead 36 to 12.

Places are still available for both boys and girls in school years 4, 5 and 6 to join the competition and more information can be obtained from Taree Basketball at Saxby’s Stadium.

There is a competition registration fee of $20.00 for individual players and the playing fee is $5.00 per player per week. 

The competition will run until mid December and there will be no games on Saturday, 03 November as the Taree Tornadoes junior representative teams will be away at a weekend carnival in Port Macquarie.

The U13 boys team to compete in Port Macquarie has been named following the trials on Sunday afternoon and the team to represent the Taree Tornadoes in this age group is Trae Gersbach, Reece Jeffriess, Rory Mitchell, Johnathon Black, Jackson Gaul, Ryan Thompson and Jarrod Smith.

The draw for Saturday, 27 October will see Taree West play St Josephs at 9.30am on court one and Wingham mixed play Wingham boys at 9.30am on court two with Wingham mixed to back up to play Chatham at 10.20am.
