Day One review
The Australian Country women’s team was the pick of the four women’s team in action on day one of the inaugural Hockey World League Series Round One competition at the National Hockey Center in Suva, Fiji.
The Aussies faced Trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand Maori in the opening match of the competition winning 3-0.
The second women’s match had Pacific nations Samoa and Papua New Guinea. The PNG team eventually won in the penalty shootout when both teams drew nil all at fulltime.
The only men’s match almost saw a surprise when Fiji President’s XI was pipped in the last five minutes of the match by a never-say-die New Zealand Maori team.
Kiwi coach and former Olympian David Kosoof scored the winner three minutes from the final buzzer for the visitors to win 3-2.
Fiji President’s XI scored twice early in the second half and were leading until the last five minutes when they conceded two goals in a span of a minute.
The teams that had a rest were Fiji and Vanuatu women, Fiji, Vanuatu and Australian Countrymen.
The chairperson of the local Organising Committee- Hanisi Visanti was delighted that the competition got off to a good start.
Competition on Day Two starts at 10am- men, Fiji vs PNG; 12pm- women, Australian Country- PNG; 2pm- men, Australian Country- Vanuatu; 4pm- women, Fiji – Vanuatu.
