Moreton Bay United sit two points clear at the top after cruising past Brisbane City 4-2 at Wolter Park on Sunday night.

Jets sealed the result inside the opening half hour following a double to Royce Brownlie and further strikes to Jordan Farina and Matt Capello.

City came closest through Ryan Roderick early, forcing Luke Borean into a fine save, but it was the high-flying Jets who went then took the initiative.

Brownlie, who netted 34 times last term, rose highest to head home Matt Capelo’s cross and make it 1-0 in the 10th minute.

Jets continued to push forward and doubled their advantage thanks to Brownlie, who initially slipped in possession before a lifting a classy finish over Matt Stein.

It was 3-0 in just 24th minute as Capelo and Mendy combined to tee up Jordan Farina for the attacking midfielder to bury his finish into the bottom corner.

Borean then kept out Antonio Murray from point-blank range, though the Jets ‘keeper was helpless to prevent Mat Biggins’ shot from the ensuing corner squeezing past a sea of bodies.

City’s rally was short-lived though as a deflected Capelo shot restored the hosts’ three-goal lead almost instantly.

Stein pulled off an impressive double save soon after the restart and, after failing to capitalise on a number of opportunities, City’s efforts were rewarded with a second in the 85th minute thanks to Murray bundling a shot past Borean.

Speaking after the match, Jets coach Adam Piddick acknowledged a slower second half was inevitable.

“We won the game pretty much in the first half and did what we had to do in the second half,” Piddick said.

While disappointed with giving away easy goals, City coach Glen Volker praised his side’s effort.

“You give a side like Moreton Bay four goals and it’s very difficult to work your way back but they really did stick to it in the second half,” Volker said.
