Macron Cup - Final Wrap

Macron Cup

Words: Michael Flynn

The Macron Cup pre-season tournament came to a close on Saturday with hosts Peninsula Power claiming the title at the expense of three PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues clubs.

Ten Man Jets Over Powered

MORETON BAY | A ten-man Moreton Bay United were overrun by a 4 goal second half blitz by local rivals Peninsula Power in the Macron Cup Final at A.J. Kelly Park.

Jets overcame the early dismissal of Alex Janovsky for a careless challenge to deliver the opener prior to half-time – Jacob Fulluck pouncing on a parried save from Power goalkeeper Jake Reesby.

However, Power made the most of their numerical advantage shortly after the break when David Salin drilled a finish into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

Kado Aoci added the first of his two goals with a firmly struck effort on the angle before earning his side a penalty just five minutes later – Charles Mendy converting with the spot-kick.

Aoci then rounded out a prolific pre-season form with the final goal – cutting inside steering his finish in off the far post to seal the silverware.

The win is Power’s first in the three year history of the Macron Cup after twice coming runners up to PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues clubs Olympic FC and Gold Coast City.

Peninsula Power FC  4 (David SALIN 55’, Kado AOCI 61’ 87’, Charles MENDY 66’)
Moreton Bay United FC  1 (Jacob FULLUCK 36’)

Olympic Take Macron Cup Third Place

MORETON BAY | Olympic FC continued their erratic pre-season returns by defeating Gold Coast City 3-1 in the Macron Cup Third Place Play-off.

Gold Coast City, who fielded a youth-based side, put Olympic on the back foot in the opening minutes when Mory Kone struck.

However, Olympic quickly asserted themselves over their inexperienced opponents and took the advantage before half-time – Danny Byrne levelling terms before Matt Heath edged his side ahead.

City remained in the contest due to several saves from goalkeeper Joshua Langdon but hopes of a comeback faded when Samuel Howarth was dismissed late in the half.

Kosi Yanakopoulos then secured the win with a strike in the final minutes.

A stronger City return to action tomorrow in the BLK Silver Boot Third Place Play-off, before again being scheduled to meet Olympic in their final pre-season match next weekend on the Gold Coast.

Olympic FC  3 (Danny BYRNE 37’, Matt HEATH 41’, Kosi YANAKOPOULOS 87’)
Gold Coast City FC  1 (Mory KONE 2’)
