Moreton Bay United have announced their first major signing of their PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland title defence - former Olympic FC defensive utility Matt Byrne.

Byrne brings additional title experience to the Jets squad after winning the Premiership-Championship double with Olympic in 2013.

The 23-year-old also previously played for Brisbane Roar Youth in the Foxtel National Youth League and with Serbian professional outfits FK Donji Srem and FK Teleoptik.

Byrne, who has the versatility to play anywhere across the back four, made 58 PlayStation 4 NPL Queensalnd appearances with Olympic over the past three campaigns.

He said he was excited to join Jets and was hopeful of continued success with his new club - including a maiden push into the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 and beyond.

“I was just looking for bit of a change really,” Byrne explained of why he left Olympic.

“I’m looking to push myself and play the best football I can. I want to try to win everything possible.”

“It was a tough decision, but I think there’s a few things in place at Moreton Bay which will help me settle and help these guys win the league.”

Jets Technical Director Adam Piddick said while Byrne will fill the gap left by departed defender Alex Henderson, he was a long-time fan of the defender.

“I’ve known Matt for a while. Even if Alex had stayed, Matt would have been one of my targets this year,” Piddick explained.

“He’s very experienced for a young footballer. In my opinion he’s in the top two or three defenders in the league, can play centre back or right full back and will add a great deal to Moreton Bay," he concluded.
