Futsal has taken another major step forward in the state with Football Queensland (FQ) today announcing the introduction of the SEQ Futsal Premier League.

Set to launch this October, the SEQ Futsal Premier League will see six clubs field teams across junior, youth and senior competitions.

Applications have been accepted from Arana United, Bundaberg Wildcats, Peninsula Futsal, Redlands City Futsal, South Brisbane FC and Sunshine Coast Wave to form the inaugural six clubs.

FQ Futsal Administrator Trevor Edwards believes the competition will elevate the game’s status in Queensland.

“I am excited about the SEQ Futsal Premier League and the opportunity it provides futsal players to compete at a high level more consistently throughout the summer season,” Edwards said.

“It has been something that many in the futsal community have spoken about and it will be great to see it come into being.

“We continue to see the game grow throughout Queensland and this is another great step forward.”

The SEQ Futsal Premier League will feature a focus on junior development underpinning senior competitions. Age groups will include:

• 12 Boys
• 14 Boys
• 16 Boys
• Youth Men (17-19)
• Open Men

• 14 Girls
• 16 Girls
• Open Women

Each division will be played in a home-and-away format for a total of 10 matches before a finals weekend is held in early February 2017.

The SEQ Futsal Premier League is designed to add to the likes of the Futsal State Titles in strengthening Queensland’s pathway to the Puma F-League, Australia’s premier futsal competition.

“Football Queensland sees futsal as an important part of our future and is pleased to provide this new opportunity,” said Football Queensland CEO Geoff Foster.

“Futsal is more than just a social alternative to football, it is a growing sport in its own right and it is important for us to develop competitive opportunities for participants.”

The announcement follows just days after South Brisbane FC secured the state’s first ever Puma F-League silverware, winning the Women’s premiership with two weekends remaining in the regular season.
