MetroStars continued their impressive week with a 3-0 success over Adelaide United in Round 15 of the PlayStation 4 National Premier League South Australia at TK Shutter Reserve on Saturday.

Stefan Simic scored twice to put MetroStars clear at half-time and captain Adam Van Dommele sealed the victory with only two minutes remaining.

After reaching the Westfield FFA Cup Qualifying Final against Croydon on Wednesday, MetroStars boss Rob Saraceno said his team did what they had to do to get the points. MetroStars are just a point outside the top six.

“It was a positive outing. We knew we had to beat the teams around us. That was our first challenge and we passed it,” he said.

“We didn’t give them much, the defence kept them out.

“I made a few changes from the squad on Wednesday night to freshen up the team. We were a bit sluggish, but did enough to win the game.”

Adelaide United captain Jordan O’Doherty said the team must stick together following its eighth loss in nine matches.

“It’s disappointing. It’s a game we knew we needed to win to avoid dropping towards the danger zone,” he said.

“We weren’t clinical enough in the final third and didn’t play to our strengths. We were knocking the ball long and we don’t play like that too often.

“We lack experience and when it comes down to hard times you rely on experience. We need to stick together and rely on what we know we can do – play good football and work hard. We can’t be negative.”

The home side took an eighth minute lead when Doni Pollock and Bailey Truscott combined to put Simic through on goal and he made no mistake to slot his shot past Daniel Margush.

Terry Theodorou’s cross was met by ex-Reds striker Pollock, but he could not generate enough power to trouble Margush.

The goalkeeper could do nothing in the 40th minute as MetroStars pressure caused a turnover just past the halfway line, with Simic then beating a defender and prodding the ball past Margush to extend the lead.

Rocky Callisto’s early second half cross came out to Theodorou on the edge of the penalty area, only for his swing goalward to be denied.

MetroStars continued to pressure the Reds and on the counter attack Pollock drilled a shot just wide of the far post.

Zack Gomez’ cross from the right was met by onrushing Adelaide United captain O’Doherty, only for his acrobatic attempt to go over the top, as the visitors struggled to find a way back into the contest.

Van Dommele won possession deep inside his own half and sparked the counter which led to the sealing third goal. The defender got on the end of Travis Dodd’s cross to head the ball past Margush in the 88th minute.
