R18 Wrap: Adelaide Comets v Campbelltown City

Campbelltown City kept pressure on Adelaide City in their hunt to take top spot with a 3-1 win over Adelaide Comets at Santos Stadium on Saturday.

Goals from Adam Piscioneri, Tom Strain and Lui Ditroia sealed the three points for the Red Devils, while Andres Weins grabbed the consolation goal for Comets.

Campbelltown winger Anthony Ture said the Red Devils showed good signs but acknowledged that there was still work to be done over the last four weeks of the regular season.

“I thought we executed our game plan very well and dominated possession for the majority of the game,” he said.

“We showed good signs coming into the busy end of the season and the win on Saturday is an example that we can score goals on the road against strong competitive teams like comets.

“Personally I don’t believe that we have cemented a top two finish until the final game of the season has concluded… But of course we are very confident now of finishing in that top two spot and the boys are looking forward to the finals series where we really hope to make an impact.”

The loss meant that Comets slipped down to fifth spot and lost ground on West Torrens Birkalla in third place, but goal scorer Weins remained positive that they can bridge the gap once again.

“Anything can happen still, the league this year is unpredictable; we will just take it one game at a time and hope other results go our way.

“Every game is a must win for the club, we want to get maximum points this year - our aim is to play finals and to win the series.”

Campbelltown asserted their dominance in possession in the early stages of the first half but could not make it count where it mattered in front of goal.

Ditroia looked a threat down the wing and would be the catalyst for the opener as he whipped an inch perfect cross in for Piscioneri who headed over an out-stretched Alex Woodlands.

Piscioneri almost added another to his name minutes later as he linked up well with strike partner Strain but his shot was wide.

Comets struggled to make things happen in the first half with their best chance coming courtesy of Theo Balomenos who did well to create space for himself on the edge of the box, but his curling shot failed to dip in time.

The Red Devils doubled their lead immediately after the restart as an excellent run from the byline by Strain was capped off with a finish at the far post despite being closed down by a defender and Woodlands tightening the angle.

Weins unexpectedly reduced the lead in the 52 minute as he brought a cross down with his chest and volleyed past Nick Harpas as the Campbelltown defence left him all alone in the box.

The big striker began to impose himself on the contest by creating plenty for his teammates but was let down by poor finishing.

Comets almost had things tied up as a freekick from a short distance outside the 18 yard box rattled against the underside of the crossbar with Weins helping the rebound across the line, but he was judged to be offside.

Campbelltown raised the intensity as Comets worked their way back into the contest and again caused trouble for the home sides defence.

Strain looked to have grabbed his second as he squeezed a shot from a Ditroia cross past Woodlands and appeared to have crossed the line, but the goal was never called and was promptly cleared of danger.

Ditroia would eventually be rewarded for his tireless work with an easy finish at the far post in added time to seal the three points.
