Grand Final Preview

Bayswater City will aim to become the first WA team to win the PS4 NPL Grand Final when they take on New South Wales outfit Blacktown City at Dorrien Gardens on Saturday, October 3.

South Australian side MetroStars, who knocked Bayswater out of the competition last season, won the 2014 NPL and Sydney United won the inaugural title in 2013.

Bayswater coach Chris Coyne believes his team can continue their unbeaten NPL season, which has stretched for 24 games.

“I think this is the best form we’ve been in for a long while,” he said. “We’re confident but this will be a good test for us because we know they’ll be a very good side. You’ve got to be doing something right to get into the Grand Final.”

After claiming the local NPLWA competition 10 points ahead of their nearest rivals, Bayswater travelled east to beat West Adelaide 2-1 in a national Quarter-Final before recording the biggest win in the NPL’s short history.

Bayswater crushed Tasmania’s Olympia FC 6-0 at Frank Drago Reserve last weekend in a lop-sided Semi-Final lit up by City’s attacking flair.

But Coyne feels his players have even more to offer.

“We could’ve scored more,” he said. “If we’d scored three or four more it would’ve sent out a shock wave; people would be thinking “look out, they’re on the warpath.”

Both clubs have players with Hyundai A-League experience and others capable of making the transition to Australia’s elite domestic level.

The winner of the PS4 NPL Grand Final secures an automatic place in next year’s Westfield FFA Cup, another fledgling competition that gives state-level clubs opportunities against A-League opposition.
