Keepers on form in goalless contest

Report by Ryan Langley

It was a night for goalkeepers – despite the poor conditions – as Floreat Athena’s Jason Saldaris and Sorrento’s James Morgan kept clean sheets at Litis Stadium.

The weather made handling difficult but both goalkeepers refused to be beaten in a war of a attrition that ended 0-0.

Sorrento coach Jamie Harnwell said the weather made it a great night for football but he was disappointed with the result.

“I thought we dominated most of the game, we had better chances and probably should have won pretty comfortably,” he said.

“On the plus side we kept another clean sheet and we dominated another team. (I’m) disappointed not to win but there are still positives there.”

Sorrento had been first to threaten through Jordan Dodd before Floreat’s Clayton Arnez returned fire with a shot from outside of the penalty area.

In the second half, Sorrento strikers Alex Morgan and Billy Quinncroft were unable to capitalise on opportunities provided by the service of Tim Hill and Niccolo Sabatini.

Arnez also had opportunities at the other end but Morgan was equal to the task.

Floreat coach Glen Gostrate said his team was yet to play their best football.

“We didn’t play extremely well in the first half, but we worked on our game plan and changed things up a little bit and I think we were better in the second half,” he said.

“I can’t say that we controlled the game, but what we could have done is snatch it on a bad day.”

He went on to say that he would absolutely take a point for drawing when his team isn’t playing well.

“We have taken a point where we probably didn’t deserve it, but we’ll take it, it’s gotten the season started so it all begins from now on.”
