Balcatta and Sorrento share points

Report by Ryan Langley

Balcatta put themselves on the board after a 1-1 draw with a 10-man Sorrento at Percy Doyle Reserve on Saturday.

It was an even contest from both sides, with looks for both teams early on, but it was Sorrento who opened the scoring in the 31st minute through a Niccollo Sabatini free-kick.

Sorrento coach Jamie Harnwell said it is unfortunate that his team couldn’t secure the three points and a win at home.

“First half we dominated, but we weren’t ruthless enough and haven’t taken our chances and haven’t been hitting the target enough,” Harnwell said.

“When we went down to ten men, we dug in and battled and got a good point out of it at the end.”

Balcatta came out strong after halftime aiming to put themselves on the scorecard and it was young star Cameron Teece answering the call and scoring the equaliser in the 52nd minute.

The 16-year-old striker is the youngest player in the Balcatta first team and Marc Anthony believes he has a big future ahead of him.

“Young Cameron is one of the brightest prospects in WA, he is only 16 so he really showed what he can do at a young age,” he said.

“He probably could have gotten three or four goals but I work with him several times a week and can see he is a natural goal scorer.”

Sorrento found themselves a man down in the 66th minute after Sabatini was red carded and ejected from the match.

Balcatta had a dominant performance for the remainder of the second half, but were unable to capitalise on their one-man advantage.

Teece aimed to put the nail in the coffin in the final minutes of the match but Sorrento keeper James Morgan kept his team afloat with a great save to end the game.
